On my way home from errands on Friday I stopped at the Redmond Watershed
Park, 133rd St. entrance, in the early afternoon. I wasn't expecting to see many
birds. About 40 feet into the park, I heard a robin give an alarm call. Then
I heard a call that I'd come to describe as an electric twang. The call was
coming closer. When the call stopped, I pished. Bingo! The bird flew in.
I'm saying to myself, Vireo. The twang started again. With my binocular
locked onto the bird, it turned its head and the sun shown into its ruby-red eyes.
What a look I had of a Red-eyed Vireo, perched just above my head on a bare
branch of a dead tree. We continued to be eye-to-eye for about a minute before
the vireo flew into the deciduous trees. I didn't care if I saw or heard any
other birds, but, of course, I did.
