Last night while kayaking from Shilshole to the West Point lighthouse, Sam Woods and I saw our first Caspian tern youngsters of the season, having heard their shrill whistle as they flew behind the adults.
This morning at the Shilshole beach the martin nestlings in the south gourd looked very close to fledging; I wouldn't be surprised if they fledge later today. In past years we've often seen them perched atop the condos to the north as they get their flight skills polished. Meanwhile, some of the nests are much further behind, with no nestlings visible at the entrances.
