This morning I went to Shilshole Bay again to check on martins, and around
1030 I saw some flurries of activity as a martin would make the big leap
from the nest. It's a funny sight, it seems that other martins take off in
hot pursuit almost as though they're cheering for a kid making a first ride
on a two wheeled bicycle. The fledgling made a quick loop around the colony
with about 8 other martins in a noisy parade, then it ducked back into the
gourd.
I'm hoping that a few martins are still around next Sunday for the Seattle
Audubon trip that I'm leading; too bad I didn't schedule it for today!
Most of the martins at the Nisqually Reach Nature Center have fledged, but
three nests were still being tended to yesterday.
