Hi! I've kept a birding log since the early 70's. Contains not only
locations, dates, companions, weather but also species seen and heard, habitats, etc.
It has been a great pleasure to be able to go back to review what I and my
companions had seen and heard in whatever location. Sorry to say I've
misplaced a few years.

When the 4-letter codes were introduced and we were able to record numbers of
species seen all over the world in a computer program of some kind, it was
great fun. BUT, I can't believe that those of us who also sketch, make book
references in our writeups, and even do our part in bird counts really want to
bother with the 4-letter codes as we write up our notes. If we wish to use the
binomials, o.k., but I don't really think it's a necessary part of daily
documentation. Regards, Murray
