Gina and tweeters,
Saw your note on tweeters and thought I would respond. While camping east of Chinook Pass along Highway 410 this past weekend I came across a pair of Three-toed Woodpeckers. If you are going to Mt Rainier via Hwy 410 then this is right on your way. The spot is along a small, inconspicuous (unmarked) road on the south side of the highway just east of Morse Creek and the turn off to Bear Gap Trailhead. This is between 1 and 2 miles west of Lodgepole Campground. The spur road takes off at the beginning of a guard rail section. If you choose to check out this site, park at the wide spot where the road takes off from Hwy 410. Walk down the spur road about 1/4 mile (surely no more than 1/2 mile), and listen for the very soft pecking of the Three Toed Woodpeckers. There was a pair here last Saturday. If you prefer a legal description then I make it T17N, R11E, S33 (SE1/4).
Good Luck.
