Paul was asking about flying squirrels. Every time I have stood on the
very summit of Oregon's Mount Hood, a flying squirrel has crawled out of
a deep hole in the snow to glide and bounce quickly out of sight, to the
SE. (My climbing partner was not quite quick enough with his Nikon to
record this event.) I was, and remain, quite positive of the
identification as a childhood chum's big brother had a stuffed and
mounted specimen that we often sneaked in to play with.

I always hesitated to share this information until I talked with a
professional climbing guide, who confessed he had witnessed the same
unusual occurence, in exactly the same spot.

While my success rate has been 100%, it has now been nearly thirty years,
and that squirrel is likely deceased (probably from starvation, not a
whole lot to eat up there!). So I would never suggest that anyone bother
to climb up there; there must be many, many more accessible places to
look for squirrels. I certainly have never returned after that first
climb!
