Hello, this is the Audubon society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday July 31. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

On July 29 a MANX SHEARWATER was with swarms of SOOTY SHEARWATERS, MURRES,
and other seabirds off the North Jetty of the Columbia river. Huge schools
of bait fish are now close off the beaches all along the coast. At Siletz
Bay among the thousands of gulls gathered there during the week were over a
thousand HEERMANN?S GULLS and 7000 CALIFORNIA GULLS.

Shorebirds are increasing now as juveniles are arriving. On July 23 six
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, a MARBLED GODWIT, and 17 WHIMBREL were in the Empire
area of Coos Bay. On July 29 a BAIRD?S SANDPIPER was on the North Spit of
Coos Bay.

On July 30 a FRANKLIN?S GULL was at Willow Bay on the east side of Sauvie
Island. On July 24 four PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at the Mollala Sewage
Ponds. On July 28, 15 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were at Fern Ridge Reservoir near
Eugene. The next day three were still there along with a SOLITARY SANDPIPER
and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER. Six GREAT EGRETS are now at Fern ridge.

On July 26 a WHIMBREL was at Wickiup Reservoir south of Bend. That day two
SOLITARY SANDIPERS and over 1000 BANK SWALLOWS were at Cold Springs NWR near
Hermiston. Fall migration has started at Malheur NWR. On July 24 a flock of
25-30 male WESTERN TANAGERS were at Refuge Headquarters. BLACK ROSY-FINCHES
are now being seen at the of Steens Mountain.
