hello tweets,

tonight i saw the remarkable film, pale male. i attended a screening
of this film, co-sponsored by the NYC audubon society and the
local chapter of the nature conservancy and hosted by my museum.
it was filmed and directed by the amateur film maker, frederick
lilien, an immigrant from belgium. this film did not use a single
professional actor but instead was full of all the wonderfully
unpredictable and amazingly funny people who were brought together
in central park by a pair of birds.

this film tells the tale of the male central park red-tailed hawk,
pale male and his first mate, first love, and the first brood of
chicks that they raised and fledged successfully in 1995. the story
was delightfully narrated by joanne woodward, with amazing and lovely
footage of the hawk family and the people who watch them and the
beautiful city where we all live, NYC. the story was funny and
moving at the same time, and it did a remarkable job conveying the
depth of feeling that these birds generated among the habitants and
visitors to this city, rich and poor, native and foreigner.

i HIGHLY recommend seeing or buying this film. you can get it from
the NYC chapter of the audubon society. you'll be glad that you did!
