Tweets - there was another big group with me this morning, on a beautiful
(too beautiful) day. Nothing too unusual turned up in terms of species,
but we got quality views of quite a few species, and ended up with a good
total.

Highlights:

Great Blue Heron Many, some landing on lake
Green Heron Several nice looks
Osprey Posed nicely on slough
R-breasted Sapsucker Very active in East Meadow
Pileated Woodpecker 2nd straight week, seen briefly
Red-eyed Vireo Finally able to see one
Swainson's Thrush 1 good look, lots of "whit" calls, few songs
Orange-crowned Wblr Heard at Rowing Club
Yellow Warbler Heard often, seen a couple of times
Bullock's Oriole Several sightings of males
Purple Finch Female singing near mansion
American Goldfinch Nice display flight over boardwalk

Adults with young:

Mallard (Rowing Club pond)
Wood Duck (F with 1 'ling on RC pond)
Red-tailed Hawk (2 young on odd-snag nest)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (near mansion)
Bushtit (rowing club)
Spotted Towhee (slough trail)
Dark-eyed Junco (near mansion)
Pine Siskin (near mansion)

Others in the group observed a pair bonding activity between RED-EYED
VIREO in the forest near the start of the boardwalk. Bruce - care to post
a description?

>From the lake platform, we heard a call that we concluded came from GREEN
HERON which we had never heard before. It was quiet, and had a somewhat
frog-like and somewhat bittern-like quality to it, though it was not
bittern nor frog. After several minutes of intermittent calling, a pair
of herons flew across the slough from the point of the calls which were
not heard again.

In bloom today were Yellow Flag iris, Nootka Rose, Red-osier Dogwood, and
Pacific Ninebark. The latter occurs only where planted in restoration
projects. Most of the roses also are only present where planted.

For the day, 59 species, but nothing new on the 2003 list which still
stands at 122.
