Belatedly wanted to report that at about 7 p.m. Friday eve (June 6) I saw a
LEWIS' WOODPECKER that flew directly in front of my car. The site was close
to 115th and Getchell Hill Rd. (84th N.E.) in Snohomish County, about a mile
east of Hwy 9 and about 6 miles east of downtown Marysville. Although
obviously a brief view, the nearly all-black plumage above, whitish collar
and breast, long tail and wings, and telltale crow-like flight were all seen
at point-blank range. This was apparently a late migrant, as the few spring
migrants we do get seem to pass through in May; I don't recall seeing or
hearing of as many reports this spring as usual from wWA. The woodpecker
was just two miles short of being able to make the yard list, doggone it.
