Greetings All,

Last evening I spent some time birding along US 2 east of Orondo in Douglas County. WA Delorme Page 83: between C and D, between 7 and 8. US 2 goes up Corbaley and Pine Canyons here. Orondo is about MP 140 on US 2. At MP 141.7 is a nice pullout. Below in the riparian was an Ash-throated Flycatcher. This bird seen and heard. Chukars were calling from rocks up on the steep slopes above. With a little patience one can often scope them out. They like to call from rocks that provide a great view of the area, so outcrops on ridgelines are worth checking. A Golden Eagle was moving back and forth along these same steep slopes. From what I have seen, Chukars are a main prey item for the eagle. This is one of many spots in this section of US 2 where Common Poorwills can be heard and occasionally seen beginning at late
sunset.

Further up US 2 at MP 144.5 is a road that takes off to the right. A
weather station is at this intersection. Take this road and park right away.
Western Flycatchers can be heard in the riparian both above and below this intersection. This is another good Poorwill spot. Western Tanagers, Lazuli Buntings, Douglas Squirrels, Least Chipmunks, and Steller's Jays are here too.

Further along US 2 at 145MP is a nice pullout with a big Ponderosa Pine. Western Flycatchers can be heard below in the riparian.

Good Birding,
