today my students and I enjoyed a fabulous hike through the old growth up to
Lake Twenty-two. Cool geology, big trees, great plants. As we sat in a nice
little trailside nook, flanked by two large cedar trees first one, then a
second Red-headed sapsucker landed amidst our group one on each tree, about
12 inches from the ground. We were all sitting on the ground doing some
quiet writing and so all you heard was the gasp of delight as these two
birds started going around the trees, flying back and forth, up and down,
doing their funny robot-like jerky head motions. What a wonderful thing to
see at eye level. The kids were still talking about it all the way home in
the van.
