David

I visited South Africa last year.

The most popular recent Field Guide seemed to be the SASOL guide, 2nd edition
(1997)

Sasol Illustrated Birds of Southern Africa. Sinclair, I., Hockey, P.A.R. &
Tarboton, W.R. 1993. Struik New Holland Publishers, Cape Town. The recommended
field guide.

Newman's Birds of Southern Africa. Newman, K.B. 1983. (mine is a 1990 up-date
but may be later ones; Southern Book Publishers, Johannesburg. An excellent
field guide.

Ian Sinclair's Field Guide to the Birds of Southern Africa is a photographic
guide and a useful companion volume. Published in S.A. by Struik, UK by
Collins and in Toronto by?

I would also highly recommend a small book on birds of the western Cape
called
Essential Birding: Western South Africa by Callan Cohen and Claire
Spottiswoode.
Struik Publishers, Cape Town
It includes information about recent splits.

Almost the entire book seems to be online at
http://www.capebirdingroute.org/

Callan and Claire run guide tours and also organise pelagics from Cape Town.

Visit the following website for details about pelagics
