Introductory Bird Banding Training Course
July 26- Aug10th. Seattle, WA

A few spaces are still available for an introductory bird banding training
course to be taught by Dan Froehlich of the UW Burke Museum, with help from Don
Norman a local MAPS bander. The course will cover all the aspects of becoming a
NABC certified bander. The class size will be small, so personalized attention
with instruction extracting passerines from nets, aging and molt, recording MAPS data,
and setting up nets for mist netting. The course price is between $300 and $350,
the latter including the NABC materials and the Pyle guide.

The course has several required evening classes, the first organizational
meeting will be Monday July 28th. The other evening class is planned for Wed
July 30th, but is flexible with the group. Each person is required to attend at
least 6 banding days, which will be available on both weekday mornings and
weekends to accomodate people with jobs as well as people taking a weekend off.
Weekday sessions will be held locally in Seattle and will be over typically by
10am. Dates planned so far include July 26th (A MAPS Visit), 27th, 30th (A MAPS
visit), 1st, 2nd, 3rd (A MAPS visit), 5th 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th. It is
possible that one weekend will be up at White Pass at the MAPS station up there,
another may be at the Bensten site at McChord AFB if permission can be granted.


Dan has been a trainer at the Institute for Bird Populations at Point Reyes, CA.

These classes are organized to help build the cadre of banders to take on the
conservation challenges that can only be met with vital rates information. They
are also focused at education, as witnessed by the over 50 presentations that
banders Don Norman and Dawn Garcia have demonstrated over the past several
years.
