Dear Tweeters,
On Saturday I ignored a little voice in my head that
kept telling me there wouldn't be very many birds at
Rasar Park (in Birdsview, Skagit County).

The little voice was right.

Here's the list for a two-hour visit:

2 Killdeer
1 Flicker
2 Varied Thrush
1 Black-capped Chickadee
3 Golden-crowned Kinglet
5 Winter Wren
1 Raven
5 American Crow
1 Spotted Towhee
3 Song Sparrow

This site will be swarming with migrants and breeding
species in a month or two; right now, it is still
winter, the hayfields are less attractive to birds
than most suburban lawns, and there doesn't seem to be
a lot going on, birdwise.

There were lots of birds near Cockreham Island,
though. A Bald Eagle was on the nest there, looking
down at a flock of 270 American Widgeon, with smaller
numbers of Mallards and other ducks. Lately these
ducks are constantly flying hither and thither, among
a number of small seasonal ponds and wetlands. One
pond actually had an American Coot on it. There has
also been a Great Horned Owl in the area, prowling
around and calling in the evenings.
