My apologies to Dennis Paulson for giving him the wrong author of
the book "The Wandering Albatros". The author is William Jameson.
Murphey wrote the foreword.
This is a small, fascinating book, that would entrance any
birdlover. Jameson was an Admiral in the British Navy, and an aviator.
He commanded an escort carrier on convoy duty during WWII in the Southern
ocean. He got interested in the Wandering Albatros, and wondered how they
could fly upwind. On leave back in England, he talked to a bunch of
ornithologists, and no one could provide an answer. So he studied the
birds more closely, and figured out how they do it. And then he proved to
be a great writer. He collected all the information he could about the
birds, and about their place in folklore and history. The book was
published in 1959 by William Morrow & Co.
