While Great Egrets certainly aren't common here on the
west side I really don't think they are all that rare
either. There seems to be a small number every year
on the west side in places away from SW Washington.
Two winters ago there was one wintering on Fir Island,
one south of Stanwood and one on the Samish all winter
long. I think last winter there was one on the Samish
as well.
