Hi, Judy and all

I have a good-sized population of varied thrushes in my yard, ca 12 or so
(2 acres of mostly trees). They like raisins and mixed nuts. What they also
seem to really like is peanuts - with the shells, mind you. I didn't
realize that the varieds, plus the towhees, would also eat the peanuts with
shells (Costco, $4.99/5lbs). I had been buying them for years for the
Steller's jays and flying squirrels and, of course, the other two squirrel
species manage to get most of them. However, I found that the varieds and
towhees would run out from under the hedge or wherever and grab a peanut
and back into hiding. Quite funny, at times. So, I guess these backyard
birds we all feed have a more varied diet than we sometimes think.
