Once again I ask that you please help prevent the destruction of Semiahmoo
Spit by
developers.

The first phase of this plan would put 62 additional units on the spit. The
existing condos consist of
32 units and have a smaller footprint.

Eventually, the develpers want to put as many as 300 units in this tiny
area!

The developers want us to think that an environmental impact study done in
1981 is
adequate to assess the impact of these projects.

Below is a letter I have sent to the Blaine City Council - please join me in
objecting to the ruin
of this unique, fragile area!

RE: Sea Grass Cottages development and other plans for Semiahmoo Spit.

Councilpersons,

I am writing to express my deep concern over plans to develop additional
condominium units on Semiahmoo Spit.

I am sure that you are aware that the spit is a rare land form with some
unique characteristics that make it a destination for people from a much
larger area than just the City of Blaine. My wife and I travel to Blaine to
enjoy this area at least twice a month. We frequently spend money while we
are there.

The Spit is uniquely suited to the needs of many migrating bird species and
is thus a very precious resource that must be preserved. Currently there
are several thousand Brandt inhabiting the spit as they rest during their
migration. There are also thousands of Loons , Mergansers, Pintails and
other wintering and migrating birds in the waters off Semiahmoo.

The developers of Sea Grass Cottages would have us believe that the results
of an Environmental Impact Study done in 1981 are adequate to asses the
impact of this project. That is preposterous! Surely you don?t believe
that environmental study has remained static for twenty two years.

At the very least, please require a complete, up to date Environmental
Impact Study of this area before allowing any construction to be
contemplated.

Further, please consider the long term good of both Blaine and the Whatcom
County area. Worldwide, eco-tourism is becoming a big industry. Areas like
Semiahmoo Spit are exactly the kinds of attractions that make eco-tourism
possible.

I have no doubt that this area could be more valuable economically in the
long run if left undeveloped.

Sincerely,

Steve Taylor
