The Varied Thrushes that come to my yard usually follow the Robins that take ripe
mountain ash berries from my trees around December. Unable to balance on a tiny
branch while they pluck berries hanging down under their toes, the V.Thrushes
wait for the Robins to finish up above and then reap a plentiful bounty from the
ground.

Besides all that has been mentioned, they also like millet, but not nearly as
well as peanuts in the shell. Also, they will eat baby slugs early in the
spring. So, if you're a gardener, plant a mountain ash or put out food for them
in the winter, particularly if you use leaf mulch.
