In Owls by Claus Konig et al. 1999 they list the following subspecies:
O.f. flammeolus mountains of SW USA south to El Salvador. Includes
meridionalis.
O.f. idahoensis Northern part of range in W N.A.. (includes frontalis
and borealis)
O.f. rarus Highlands of Guatemala.
