I arrived at the Old Lower River Road sparrow feeding spot at
about 12:30 on Friday, 3/14 and found Eric Bjorkman already there. He
said that the strange sparrow had been there shortly before I showed up,
so I waited and watched for the next four and a half hours. The HARRIS'
SPARROW came in three times during my wait and there were many
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, SONG SPARROWS,, a FOX
SPARROW, and three SPOTTED TOWHEES. One of the towhees is brownish and
nearly devoid of spots and exhibits no wing-bars, probably the least
spotted towhee that I have seen in the west. Other species coming to the
birdseed were WESTERN SCRUB-JAY, HOUSE FINCH, and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD,
along with four Eastern Cottontail Rabbits. A SORA called from the marsh
and one SNOW GOOSE was in a flock of cackling CANADA GEESE that flew
over. But no unusual sparrows came in during the time I was there, I
added more birdseed to the chum spot before leaving.
