Mark and I saw our first migratory male rufous hummer this morning on the
South Bank of Lincoln Park in West Seattle. The bird was doing territorial
dives and perching in snags between Madrona Trees. Our winter rufous hummer
guest is still here, but he is not in full adult plumage yet. Looks like a
scruffy molting adolescent, with a few bright orange feathers and "amulets"
instead of a fully developed gorget. We have hundreds of pictures, and will
post an update soon. Lots of activity this morning among the regulars in
the park, including singing Hutton's Vireos. On the way out toward (and
very near) the North Parking Lot, we heard some serious crow activity, and
were directed by them to a Barred Owl perched in a cedar tree.
