My husband and I ventured over to E WA to see the Sage Grouse this week.
While we were viewing the birds (from our vehicle with a scope), a local
WDFW law enforcement official also arrived at the site. He checked us out,
was very polite and friendly, but upset that he has found evidence that
indicates people has gone through the fence into the sage where the lek is
located. He asked me to post to Tweeters reminding anyone who goes over there
that that we need to remain on the road. The lek is on private property, and
the birds are protected. He would not hesitate to issue a ticket if he finds
someone on the property. He is apparently making the rounds of all the known
leks most days in an effort to ensure the continued safety of the birds.
