Here is another observation of a small raptor attacking a larger bird.
In April, a couple of years ago, we were camping and birding in
Miller?s Canyon Arizona at Beatty?s Orchard Camp with a couple of
birdos from Australia.

While walking up the canyon one evening we came upon an adult male Wild
Turkey walking through a copse in a ravine ahead of the trail. We
observed the Turkey for a few minutes since he didn?t seem aware of our
presence. It was getting pretty dark when the Turkey flew into a tall
tree in the ravine. It appeared to us that the Turkey was going to
roost in the tree for the night.

A few minutes later a Cooper?s Hawk appeared and started to attack the
turkey. With feathers flying the Turkey flew down from his perch with
the hawk in pursuit. The Turkey finally disappeared into the copse and
the Cooper?s Hawk flew away.

The next morning we discovered that the Cooper?s Hawk had a nest in a
tree not far from where the Turkey was attempting to roost. We doubt
that Turkey is a part of a Cooper?s Hawk?s diet, but they are sure
protective of their nesting territory.

Here is the Miller?s Canyon humming bird report at that time with too
many to count of most species:

Magnificent,
Broad-tailed (whose wings make a buzzing sound like a cricket)
Black-chinned
White-eared
Blue-chinned
Anna?s
Berylline
Calliope
