Today my mother and I birded a few areas between the Hoquiam STP to Tokeland,despite the rather windy conditions with scattered rain showers at times. Our first stop of the day was made along Wakefield Rd. south of Elma,where we were able to briefly observe the Spizella sparrow along with up to 5 Lincoln's Sparrows in the same wet,weedy field than we previously reported the bird at on the 15th of March.We were able to locate a few highlights for the day that are notable,but noted minimal shorebird movements at several areas we checked except during a visit to Midway Beach Rd. that hosted lingering numbers of Dunlin,and Western and Least Sandpipers and up to 18 Snowy Plovers that were noted foraging north of the end of the road above the high tide line. A visit to Tokeland also produced the regular wintering large shorebird flock at the Tokeland Marina along with a few other species that were observed. Increasing numbers of both scaup species were noted in Grays Harbor bordering the Hoquiam STP,as several birds were noted flying to and from the actual sewage pond, in which we were able to locate a single male REDHEAD amongst the large flock of foraging scaup. Due to the recent fairly heavy rainfall along with heavy winds we noted several areas that were flooded, such as along Ocosta Third Street in the Ocosta area.
