Hello All,
Well the 6th Othello Sandhill Crane Festival is over and if you missed it, I am sorry for you. This was an outstanding weekend of super birding tours, Great presentations and wonderful people. I will list only the birding highlights from the weekend.
Friday, March 21
Aboard a jetboat birding Potholes Res. from MarDon Resort Cpt. Kelly helped 7 of us find the following species.
1. Tree Swallow---200+ birds in a flock perched in willows atop a small sand dune island.
2. Cliff Swallow - 2 birds in with the Tree Swallows.
3. Glaucous-winged Gull - 1 subadult bird at gull colony on island in the lake.
4. Common Merganser - 60+ on northern Potholes Res.
Evening Tour:
5. Sandhill Cranes - 2200 in the "swirl" at Corfu.
6. Canada Geese - 25,000 in the "swirl" at Corfu.
7. Duck species - 30,000 also in the swirl.
8. Prairie Falcon - 1 adult at Morgan Lake.
9. Snow Geese - 3 adults at Para Ponds.
10. Ross' Goose - 1 at Para Ponds.
11. Greater Scaup - 1 at Para Ponds.
Saturday 22 March am tour:
12.Say' Phoebe---1 bird west of Othello
13. Violet-green Swallows----6+ birds
14. Sandhill Cranes----2000+ along Crab Creek.
15. Yellow-headed Blackbird----400+ along Corfu Rd.
16. Burrowing Owl---2 birds east of Othello along Steele Rd.
Sunday 23 March, 7am----1:30 pm birding tour
17. Blue Jay----1 ad. south of Othello
18. Long-billed Curlew----3 birds south of Othello
19. Fox Sparrow-----1 bird at west end of Hatton Rd.
20. Turkey Vulture-----1 bird out over Crab Cr.
21. Great Horned Owl----3 birds
22. Barn Owl----1 bird
23. Loggerhead Shrike----4 birds
24. Prairie Falcon----1 ad. at Morgan Lk.
