Dear Tweeters,

On Sunday, March 23, several thousand Snow Geese were feeding just east of Dry Slough Road on Fir Island (Skagit County). Then they all flew up. It turned out to be a Golden Eagle diving into the flock. It was a spectacular scene, with the huge raptor appearing, then disappearing in the mass of white. The predator tried several sorties, each one separated from the next by a seemingly leisurely "departure," but never got a goose. Most of the geese outwaited him, but a thousand or so did fly off to the south at one point.

One or two Turkey Vultures flew over the Fir Island Game Range, too. Later, out on the Samish Flats, I whizzed by a farm that appeared to have three TUVUs huddled in a corner of a field, right by the road. However, at the speed I was driving, I suppose I could have mistaken some turkeys for the TUVUs!

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
