Dear Tweeters, A single Whimbrel flew over my place near Lyman, Skagit County, this evening. It called repeatedly as it flew westwards down the Skagit Valley, at a hundred feet or so above the ground. It was the first I'd seen this spring, and a new bird for our yard list, too! The bird house I made for Violet-green Swallows was not good enough for them. They hung around a few days and moved on. However, I just looked inside it, assuming there would be House Sparrows inside, and a Black-capped Chickadee was incubating in there. On the down side, there seem to be dozens of baby Starlings battening in various cavities in our enormous big-leaf maple tree. Finally, I would like to close with an entomological question: which species of Giant Water Bug would one expect in western Skagit County? The one that was captured in the school where I teach was a real whopper.
