I can tell the vultures are back: 13 pages of sightings for the
month! Following are the reports for April 2003 from Washington, British
Columbia, and Oregon:

01 -- 1 at the intersection of Fall City-Carnation Road; 2 sunning
themselves on fence posts near Munson's Pond, B.C.; 4 near Cle Elum; 1 west
of Morse Creek; 2 near Oyster Bay, B.C.; 3 over Menzies Bay, B.C.
02 -- 1 at the Julia Butler Hanson NWR; 1 near Manchester SP1; at Butchart
Gardens, B.C.
03 -- 3 at Littlerock flying west; 2 swooping down on a deer hide laying in
a field northeast of Spokane; 8 at Sooke, B.C.; 4 at Langford, B.C.; ca. 8
over the Game Farm at Sequim; 1 soaring over Fall City; 1 near Snoqualmie;
21 near the Brady Loop Road;
04 -- 3 just west of the Humptulips River
05 -- 1 soaring over Nisqually Ridge; 1 circling over the point (?); 3
soaring over fields west of John Wayne Marina; 1 between Cle Elum and Easton
06 -- circling turkey vultures near Roslyn (no number); 1 at Osborn Bay; 1
at Steamboat SP boat launch; 2 along Marion Drain/Lat."A"; 2 along Lat. "C"
just south of Marion Drain; 4 near Freshwater Bay Road (Joyce area)
07 -- 3 west of College Place
08 -- 12 or more between Gold Bar and Sultan heading west; 14 along Brady
Loop and Foster Roads; 2 over downtown Haney, B.C.; 2 out at 7pm north of
Hwy 109/MP12
09 -- 12 over Pitt Polder, Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 1 between Arlington and
Granite Falls; 4 at Million Dollar Mile (near Coulee City)
10 -- 1 over a band of wild horses near Dry Creek Elbow; 2 at the Coulee
City roost; 1 at Joyce; 1 on US101 near Blyn; 9 along McNeill Road, B.C.; 2
over fields near South Bagley Creek Road; 1 at Gibsons, B.C.; 1 between
Olympia and Shelton perched in a tree above a deer carcass; 1 near Sequim;
1 at Joyce
11 -- 1 near Golf Course Road/I-90; 1 north of Ellensburg; 1 at Chenois
Creek; 1 cruising the beach at Gibsons, B.C.; 4 near Nanaimo; 2 flying down
the street in Lantzville, B.C.; 3 hovering over a deer carcass at the Julia
Butler Hanson NWR
12 -- 5 circling over the north side of Grays Harbor NWR; 12 near the

13 -- 3 over Quartermaster Harbor; 1 in Lantzville, B.C.; 1-4 birds from
the south end of Willapa Bay eastward up the Columbia River to Hansen NWR;
5 between Easton and Cle Elum; 1 east of McCleary; 4 at Elma; 4 at Satsop;
7 at the Brady Loop Road complex; 1 south of Elma
14 -- 4 near Kelowna, B.C.
15 -- 3 soaring near Elma/Brady
16 -- 2 soaring near Joyce
17 -- 6 at the Toppenish NWR; 8 at Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 2 soaring near
Langley, B.C.
18 -- 12 having a field day with dead carp at the Sates WAR; 27 at Rock
Creek Cove
19 -- 8 along the Brady Loop Road; 1 at Elma; 1 at Montesano; 1 west of
Aberdeen; "scores" roosting on the P Ranch fire tower at Malheur NWR, Oregon
20 -- 2 perched on the west side of the Elwha River; 2 in perfect feather
at Littlerock; 1 east of Port Angeles
21 -- 4 at Elma; 8 north of Elma; 2 at Satsop; 14 along the Brady Loop
Road; 3 near Satsop; 2 at Pitt Polder, B.C.; 1 near Joyce; 1 passing
through Columbia NWR; 6 on the ground near Rennie/Ladner Roads, B.C.
22 -- 4 south of Grant Narrows RP, B.C.
23 -- 14 over Engles Creek, Hwys 97/2
24 -- 2 near Joyce; 1 near Scatter Creek WRA; 14 at the Brady Loop Road
complex
25 -- 1 west of Montesano; 12 along the Brady Loop Road; 2 along Wenzel Slough
26 -- 1 at Johns River; 7 at Tokeland; 4 at Johns River WA; 1 west of
Markham; 8 over the Wynoochee River bridge; 2 west of Montesano; 3 at Brady
Loop; 14 along Wenzel Slough perched in red alder trees for a possible
evening roost
27 -- 1 over Toppenish Creek; 1 at Hoquiam STP; 4 along Foster Road; 2
along Wenzel Slough; 1 along Wakefield Road
28 -- 5 along Midway Beach Road; 3 at Montesano; 8 along Foster Road; 5
along Wenzel Slough; 7 just north of Campbell River, B.C.; 2 at Rocky Point
Park, B.C.
29 -- 7 roosting in a tree along Foster Road; 1 trying to land on the
flimsy top of a very tall fir northeast of Belfair; 1 west of Mount Vernon

Thanks, as always, for the many and varied reports. I appreciate the
details some of you include. These are interesting birds that do a lot more
than just soar and gaze at deer carcasses!! Keep looking up.
