Hi Tweeters-

I had some extra time this afternoon so I went up to Mt. Rainier out of curiosity to see what sort of birds would be up there this early in the spring. The weather was great although I was not up there during the best time of day for birding. The snow patches started above Cougar Rock, and began in earnest above Ricksecker Point. There is about 4-5 feet of snow at Narada Falls, and 6-8 feet at Paradise. I heard a few birds high in the trees that I could not identify (lots of songs yet to learn) but managed to identify the following (listed by location in order of elevation):

(Outside the Park)

LaGrande, near the dam: 1 Turkey Vulture (I later saw 2 Turkey Vultures between Alder and Elbe)

Alder Lake Park: 1 Common Loon and two small ducks that were too far away for me to figure out

(Inside Mt. Rainier NP)

Kautz Creek: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Stellar's Jay and Common Raven

Longmire Trail of the Shadows: Common Raven, Oregon Dark-eyed Junco, lots of American Robin, Rufous Hummingbird, Stellar's Jay, 4 Red-winged Blackbird, 2 Mallard, Northern Flicker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee, 2 Canada Goose (a bit unusual for the Park-they've been there for a few days according to a ranger I spoke with), 20 Band-tailed Pigeon which were feeding in the cattails and flew up to the trees when 4 Black-tailed Deer showed up, Song Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, 6 Violet-green Swallow

Between Longmire and Cougar Rock: Varied Thrush heard through my open car window as I drove

Narada Falls: 3 Gray Jay, 1 Common Raven, 3 Stellar's Jay, 1 Red-breasted Sapsucker (really bright red color and I did not notice very much yellow on it at all)

Paradise parking lot: Stellar's Jay, 5 Gray Jay, 1 Clark's Nutcracker, 2 Common Raven, 2 Oregon Dark-eyed Junco

Looking forward to summer up there--
