Urban birding is starting to get more interesting as more migrant species
make their way through my neighborhood. This morning's surprise was first
hearing and then seeing a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK visit the feeders in our
yard in Tacoma's North End. Unfortunately, the black sunflower seeds it
was looking for had run out yesterday afternoon, so the bird didn't hang
around long. I have since refilled the feeders...

Other birds hanging around the neighborhood include surges of YELLOW-
RUMPED WARBLERS, both the Myrtle and Audubon races, and the Black-capped
Chickadee family nesting in a box near our feeders. I was a little
surprised to see a Dark-eyed Junco in the yard this morning, since they
have been largely absent from the yard over the last few weeks. But
without a doubt the grosbeak was the highlight of the day so far. Last
year we only had one Black-headed Grosbeak visit the yard all year, so
hopefully there will be more this year.
