I had the opportunity to do some birding on Whidbey this afternoon. The
ferry crossing yielded pigeon guillemots, glaucous-winged gulls, and one
marbled murrelet.

I headed for some private property in the Greenbank vicinity that has
several ponds. The most entertaining sight was the red-winged blackbirds
trying to push a bald eagle out of their territory. Other birds, in no
particular order, were brown-headed cowbirds, mallards, Anna's hummingbirds,
rufous hummingbirds, one towhee, Steller's jays, one downy woodpecker, one
red-breasted nuthatch, lots of juncos, two wood ducks (drakes), two common
Canada geese, mourning doves (heard), robins, one American goldfinch,
starlings, and one song sparrow.

I got a chance to cruise by Crockett Lake before heading home. The most
interesting sighting was two American avocets. Other than that I spotted
Canada geese, barn swallows, mallards, dunlins, several great blue heron,
lots of red-winged blackbirds, two northern harriers (male and female), two
double-crested cormorants, and one savannah sparrow. There were other
swallows and shorebirds but with fading light and distance I couldn't
identify them.

Nice day to be somewhere other than the office.
