A person who is familiar with all of the Washington State
hummingbirds called me to report a "large" female hummingbird was coming
to his feeder in Washougal. I spent several hours two evenings in a row
watching the feeder and only saw hordes of RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS and a
couple of ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS. When I spoke with the home owner as we
watched the feeder he described the bird as being at least a half again
as long as a female Anna's. Hopefully it will return so I can figure this
one out.
This evening I got a call about a bird that didn't get away,
someone reported that they saw a dead POORWILL on the roadway in
Vancouver. The caller said they would go right back out and pick it up,
bag and freeze it for positive identification.
