Today I saw the first Black-headed Grosbeak, a male, at my feeder. My entry
date for last year's arrival was May 15th. A baby robin is being fed and
baby juncos are now in my yard. A day ago I observed a male Purple Finch
share a sunflower seed from the feeder with a male Dark-eyed Junco. They may
have been as surprised as I was.

I have Douglas Squirrels year-round. It's fun to watch them go round and
round the cedar trees and see them intimidate the gray squirrels. However,
today I observed a coupling. I had no idea it would take 18-20 minutes
before they'd go their separate ways. They rolled back and forth the whole
time with no vocalization. I hope Mrs. Douglas raises her family in my
flicker nest-box again this year.

The Long-tailed Weasel had an adult mouse in its mouth as it scampered across
the patio. I'm quite pleased with the housekeeping. I'll also add that this
seems to be a very good year for Rufous Hummingbirds. I have more this year
than I've had for several of the past years.
