Hi All,
Spent 2.5 days birding parts of Grant, Douglas, Lincoln, and
Okanogan Counties under cool, windy, partly cloudy skies with rain/sleet
showers mixed in for excitment. Highlights of the trip were a flock of about
6-8 Lazuli Buntings, 2 Lewis's Woodpeckers, 2 Yellow-breasted Chats, and a
Chipping Sparrow in Northrup Canyon on Saturday. We found it somewhat
protected from the wind and proved very productive. Wanupuam State Park on
the Columbia also had 1 Lewis's Woodpecker plus 3 Western Wood-Pewees It was
also loaded with Yellow-rumps, and Wilson's Warblers plus 7 Warbling Vireos.
Sunday we headed for Bridgeport State Park but is was slow due to the strong,
cool winds with just a scattering of Yellow-rumps, 3-4 Western Tanagers and a
pr of Cassin's Finches. After Brigdeport we birded up toward Loup-Loup
Campground but its still to cold there as it sleeted heavily and the temps
hovered in the low 30's. Arriving in Winthrop we heard and saw large numbers
of Evening Grosbeaks and Western Tanagers in town plus an imressive number of
Yellow-rumps in Pearrygin Lake State Park.
The weather made it rough birding at times with cool, sometimes
strong winds but it was worth it! We also saw numerous other birds on our
trip and if anyone wants more specific info for an area, let me know and will
be happy to respond.
Good birding,
Doug Watkins
