I don't know about the songbirds for this area but next time you get to go birding there see if you can stop by American Lake. I often go fishing there and I always see good stuff there. There are two bald eagles that appear to live there that I see every time I go. I also occasionaly see a golden eagle, a red tailed hawk, and a merlin. There are huge amounts of vg swallows and many duck species. Species I've seen there are mallard, ring necked duck, redhead, common merganser, hooded merganser, bufflehead, common goldeneye, barrows goldeneye, wood duck, and yellow billed loon. As a non-military person, I don't get that many chances to bird there. Even with all the other volkswalkers (and their dogs), I saw and heard a number of birds. There were at least 6 to 10 birds that I heard only and could not identify, but did get my first Olive-sided Flycatcher. Here were the other birds that I identified either in the housing area near the parade grounds, or up on the hill in the woods, in the order that I found them: White-crowned Sparrow, Barn Swallow, Violet-green Swallow, American Crow, European StarlingHouse Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Dark-eyed Junco, Brewer's Blackbird, Song Sparrow, Rock DoveAmerican Robin, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Black-capped Chickadee, Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) WarblerPurple Finch, Savannah Sparrow, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Killdeer, Tree Swallow, Yellow WarblerSteller's J!
ay, Orange-crowned Warbler, Western Tanager, Bewick's Wren, Rufous HummingbirdRed-tailed Hawk, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Spotted Towhee, Chestnut-backed ChickadeeAmerican Goldfinch, Chipping Sparrow. I also saw a very light-colored sparrow that I am guessing was a Vesper Sparrow, but am not sure about that. If anyone would like to help me learn, they can email me privately with ideas for birds I should have been able to see or hear there today, but did not list. I would be most grateful! Thanks Tweeters, I really enjoy reading your posts and am learning from just about every birder I come across. Linda AdamsPuyallup, WA
