Ruth and Patrick Sullivans' post on the Wenas Campout described
many of the birds found this year. There were a total of 143 species seen
in the Wenas Creek Drainage during the outing, which I believe is a
record high number. Other excellent birds reported included a well
described RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, another addition to the "master" list
along with the White Pelicans. I attribute the number of birds seen to
the increased competence of the birders and not to any increase in the
number of birds. Twenty five years ago you used either a Peterson's or
Golden Bird Guide and books as well designed and as detailed as the
Sibley or National Geographic weren't even dreamed possible.
We were lucky to have Patrick and Ruth Sullivan leading trips and
I was disappointed not to be able to bird with Charlie Wright who
astounded people with his abilities in the field. Hopefully they will
consent to lead trips at Wenas during future campouts. While birding is
paramount to many of us, it was only part of fun of the Campout. I enjoy
meeting all of the people that come each year and recognize many people
who post messages on Tweeters. If you haven't made it to the Wenas
Campout you should plan for it next year, where else are you guaranteed a
camp site on Memorial Day Weekend?
