Having read previous postings about UK "twitchers" watching birds for
seconds, it is with some trepidation that I put this request out. I will be arriving
in Washington in the evening of July 27th from England, and have 4 days
birding with family, before taking the Westport pelagic on 2nd August and flying to
California on 3rd. There are only a few species in Washington at that time of
year I haven't seen, and I would like some advice re itinerary/sites. I don't
expect to be shown around. I have ordered Bob Morse's book, but it has not yet
arrived.
Target species are Varied Thrush and Northwestern Crow, and Olympic NP seems
the best destination. A stake-out for Northern Saw-whet Owl would be an
unexpected bonus. Having read an earlier mail about Yakima County, Lewis' Wodpecker
and Sage Grouse would also be new (Sage Grouse now being split from Gunnison's
I have seen before). I'm not sure whether both Yakima and Olympic NP are
feasible in 4 days. Distance is usually not too much of a problem. However, I
want to decide an itinerary in order to book accommodation
