The new _Birds of Oregon: a general reference_ is not (nor
was it intended to be) a field guide. It is a compilation of
status, distribution and natural history of all birds known
to occur in Oregon (so far). It should be thought of as the
21st century update of Gabrielson and Jewett's _Birds of Oregon_.

Compromises regarding illustrations, maps and some of the
amenitities of literary prose were taken to stuff as much information
into one reasonably sized, reasonably priced volume.

I have not seen it, though I have read most of it online as
a contributor and one of the ka-gillion or so reviewers.

I suspect folks will either love it or hate it, depending on
what they want in a bird book...

A child who becomes acquainted with the birds about him
hears every sound and puzzles out its meaning with a cleverness
that amazes those with ears who hear not.
