Subject: Lake Sammamish State Park devastation

To those interested in preservation of Lake Sammamish State Park as wildlife
habitat:

A follow-up on the subject of plans for destruction of wildlife habitat at
Lake Sammamish to build a water sports center and restaurants there. I
mistakenly implied that King County Parks was involved with the proposal to
clean up all of that messy wild stuff, brown overgrown grass, untrimmed
trees and shrubs with their unsightly dead branches left lying around to
harbor icky bugs, spiders and nasty snakes and the uncivilized birds that
eat those disgusting crawly things. (There are even cannibal birds there
that eat other birds!) And who cares if this park harbors the only known
populations of 2 sedge species in the metropolitan Seattle area? We should
thank the developers and government officials that have arranged to clean up
this mess and put in aquatic center where our children can safely swim in
chlorine filled water that will kill any nasty bugs in it, and where
civilized people can eat at restaurants rather than having to forage for
wild berries that may have stink bugs on them. I wasn't thinking when I
implied that this STATE park was controlled by county officials.

While it is a state park, developers would push these kinds of plans with
any government agency they could buy. Right now we have a chance to
possibly have some influence on the kind of government officials we have in
King County. If you live anywhere around Issaquah you could vote to
re-elect a county council member that was elected with heavy developer
funding (the Republican incumbent, David Irons) or you can vote for the
previous County Council member Brian Derdowski. Derdowski was one of an
endangered species of green Republicans who thought that Republicans were
supposed to be conservationists (remember the Republican Teddy Roosevelt
that brought us the Naitonal Park System). The incumbent David Irons is a
pariah in his family and the challenger, Derdowski (now running as a
Democrat) has the full support of the sister and parents of the incumbent.
While officially representing the Issaquah area district the winner will
vote on development (or devastation) issues throughout King County.

If you'd like to support the developer funded incumbent (who broke campaign
finance laws by failing to properly report those contributions) his campaign
contact info is: Friends (ie. developers) to elect David Irons 425-313-9536

Carl and Tweeters

As I expect you know there's some special flora in Lake Sammamish Park too.
(Birds have taken a back seat to botany for me in recent years.) This sounds
like some major criminal activities in the works with some big money for
contractors and possibly favors or kickbacks for the officials that
facilitate it. I used to work in the Seattle Parks dept. It's run by
corrupt people with no appreciation for nature, but with a clear
appreciation of expensive consturction projects. I don't know how much
better King Co. Parks is. It's unfortunate that many people believe a
"park" is equivalent to a playground, ballfield, lawn, manicured flower bed
or an amusement park. I always thought a "park" was like a national park or
wildlife refuge. I hope those of us who understand the value of nature can
muster a succesful campaign to stop this.

Hi Tweets,

Lake Sammamish State Park near Issaquah (King Co) may be getting
a major face lift to the conceivable detriment of birdlife there.
The Issaquah Press reports: "By 2008 the park could include a
giant aquatic center equipped with giant slides, a boardwalk with
restaurants and shops, a multi-purpose sports complex, and a
corporate picnic area." Egad!! The concept will be recommended
at a Dec. 4 meeting at Rattlesnake Lake Interpretive Center near
North Bend and is open to the public.

The birding was excellent at the park this morning. A full
list follows. Two new birds were added to the checklist at
http://www.pluggablelogic.com/aves/lssp/index.html: Trumpeter
Swan and Evening Grosbeak - though I suspect over the years both
species have been recorded there before...?

In that vein, if you know of any records not on the checklist,
please let me know. As a case in point, I'm still looking for
gallinaceous critters (I've had both quail and pheasant within
a mile of the park).
