> How many would pay $100 for a life bird?


At this point of our "listing" life anything under $100 is the exception,
with all the traveling involved. A couple of tanks of gas is $40 in this neck of
the woods, cost of food and motel. My last several lifers have been
approaching four figures ($650 for a four day pelagic trip, for one lifer) and few
have been over it, but we are talking about an across the country trips
specifically for the Bicknell's Thrush, that was a 10 days long birding trip, but with
the expectation of only a couple of lifers and on which we only got two -- The
Bicknell's Thrush and Saw-whet Owl.

BUT I agree, I do not routinely spend more than a tank of gas for a whole day
of birding and we specifically skipped the Simon & Garfunkel concert here in
L.A. to have money for that next lifer chase.
