Sorry for the delay in this post. Yesterday, Scott
Downes and I birded Whidbey Island as well as a little
bit of the Samish flats. The snow stopped and by
10:30 the sun was shining and would remain so the rest
of the day. Despite the chill it was rather pleasant
and the birds were no exception. Highlights included
a Lapaland Longspur at Crockett Lake as well as a few
Least Sandpipers with a large flock of Dunlin and
Western Sandpipers. We failed to find the flock of
Black Turnstones and Surfbirds in Penn Cove although
we didn't spend much time looking. We did find a
single Black Turnstone on the south side of the cove
along with huge numbers of mostly Surf Scoters but
several White-winged as well. There were probably
1500 or so Western Grebes right in the middle of the
cove, but this figure could be off. The raft was
awfully large. Additionally we had one Cattle Egret
on Norman Rd. near Silvana, and probably had atleast
two others but we were in a hurry so we didn't
turnaround for better looks of them to be sure.
