Hi Tweeters,

Ditto on "Waterfowl" by Madge/Burn. Especially disappointing after seeing the art for "Shorebirds", a book in the same style (by Houghton Mifflin). Another, "Seabirds", isn't that great either.
Anyway . . .Another good book for the geese is "The Handbook of Bird Identification for Europe and the Western Palearctic" Beaman and Madge. It has a page with the various races of Bean (including juv. and in flight) and four angles of Pink-Footed (including in flight). The opposite page has about ten paintings of Greater and Lesser-White Fronted Geese (including juv).

Probably my favorite book for European birds is the multi-volume "Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa". Pictures are O.K. but the text is unbeatable. 7 pages on the Pink-foot, 7 on Bean etc. Field characters, measurements (really great!), plumages, distribution, sonagrams, melograms etc. Of course you'd probably need a caddy to carry it in the field for you (but not bad for keeping in the car for those Hoquiam trips).

I'd be interested in other books people find worthwhile. I'd especially like to hear Ian Paulsen chime in. He seems to know his way around the bird book world quite well.
