This morning around 9 a.m. I had a FRANKLIN'S GULL off the North Jetty at
Ft. Canby SP on the Washington side of the Columbia River mouth. I'm new to
the Pac NW, but I'm guessing this is getting late for them?? It was a
basic-plumaged adult, or possibly a 2nd-winter with less than average amt of
black on the wingtips. After sitting on the water preening and flapping with
other gulls on the river side of the jetty, it flew far upriver. About 15
min. later I turned the scope again on the gull flock, and did a double-take
upon seeing what appeared to be the same bird, sitting roughly where it had
formerly been! Either it had circled back, or there were TWO Franklin's
Gulls there all along. Nice movement of loons, scoters, kittiwake, pelican,
sea lions, etc., on a fairly calm ocean.
