I finally got another chance to chase the wild geese at Bowerman and was fortunate to locate the two Pink-footeds at the K Street spot this morning about 8:30 AM [Thursday, November 13], with Canadas and two White-fronted Geese, an adult and an immature, for a nice comparison. The Pink-footeds seemed about the same size as the White-fronts but with a shorter neck and bill and readily distinguished even when half-hidden in the grass by their paler back coloration.

By the way, my contribution to the Marbled Godwit sweepstakes at Tokeland is 1400 last Saturday afternoon (Novembeer 8). This number is based on two careful counts by 10s and then by 5s, separately by the divisions defined by the pilings at the pier, and confirmed by separate counts by George Gerdts. I'm confident the true number was within 5%. The size of this flock seems to be growing year by year. The Hudsonian was buried in their midst, mostly with their bills tucked into the feathers of their backs, only the conspicuous white supercilium calling our attention.

Also, at sundown on Saturday I found 6 Snowy Plovers on the beach at the foot of Midway Beach Rd. Thanks to Andy and Co. for the heads-up.
