Subject: Directions to Washington birding localities

Tweeters,

When I referred to Hal Opperman's book as Oppenheimer's book it was a
mistake not a wisecrcack. (Thanks to Ian Paulson for catching that bad
error) I never intended to connect Hal Opperman to the designer of the
nuclear bomb Oppenheimer. My apologies to Hal. I also didn't intend that
directions need be given to every bird, only that it would be best if
locations mentioned made sense to those who didn't have his book and that
anyone could easily determine the general area of a sighting. With Point No
Point for example, unless you indicate it's in north Kitsap one might think
it's the Point No Point in southwest Vancouver Island about 20km west of
Sooke (which is about 20km west of Victoria).

Tweeters,

I thank Wayne for his suggesting that the subject line or first 2 lines
should include a reference to where in the state or province the sighting
occurred. This has been my main concern and I expressed it because I
expected others had the same concern. As for requiring that everyone buy
Oppenheimer's new book I think that's excessive. I went into Fauna and
Flora Books at 121 1st Av S. in Seattle (I hope that this is sufficient
location information) and saw Oppenheimer's new "Birder's Guide to
Washington). It looks like an excellent book, but as an unemployed
naturalist (I could tell a long ugly story about the Seattle Parks
Department) I can't afford it. If Wayne wants to buy me a copy I'd very
much appreciate it.

Tweeters,

Now that "A Birder's Guide to Washington" has been published by the
American Birding Association, many of the inquiries formerly sent to
Tweeters about "Where is such and such a place?" should be
superfluous. In my opinion, every serious birder living in the state
should own a copy of this book, which covers the vast majority of
frequently-birded localities in Washington. For example, Point No
Point and Foulweather Bluff (Kitsap Co.) are well described on pages
192 and 193 in the book. If someone can't be bothered to spend $30 to
buy the book, then I don't think they should be wasting our time by
asking directions to localities that are well-known to most or many of
us.

At the same time-- despite the comprehensive coverage of the book
(yup, this is a disguised plug for the book)-- there are many good
birding localities that are *not* described in the book, and a brief
description of such localities by the person posting the message would
be helpful.

Stewart Wechsler does have a point when he suggests that many of us
are too brief or too vague in describing birding localities. At the
very least, I would suggest including the county (or city, if in or
near a major city), as well as the name of the locality, in the
subject line or in the first line or two of the message. This would
be helpful, especially for those who are on less than intimate terms
with Washington geography.
