Stewart Wechsler said, " I never intended to connect Hal Opperman to the
designer of the
nuclear bomb Oppenheimer." I don't want to make a big deal out of this,
especially since it's not a proper topic for Tweeters, but please don't cast
aspersions when you don't know the facts. J. Robert Oppenheimer was a
brilliant physicist. He took on the task of supervising the development of
the atomic bomb, a task that many scientists engaged in enthusiastically
because of the strong threat that the Nazis would develop one first, which
might have been a calamity for the world. The later use of the bomb, and
the subsequent atomic age that developed from it, were major problems, but
they weren't Oppenheimer's fault. The atomic scientists opposed the use of
the bomb and have worked diligently since that time for a sane nuclear
policy.) It is no insult to be confused with Oppenheimer, though of course
we all want our friend and colleague Hal to be properly designated.
