Hello and Happy Thanksgiving Mike and Tweeters,
There are two optional recipients that I know of in Seattle for "good
condition" bird specimens. One is the Burke Museum at the U/W (use the west
side entrance at the back of the buiilding). Information can be obtained
through Chris Wood or Rob Faucett, the bird collection managers at
206-543-1668. They can provide tags for the birds indicating where they
were found, when, and by whom. They suggest stuffing a bit of cotton into
the beak before freezing. The other option is the Seattle Audubon
office/store at 8050 - 35th Ave. NE.
Such specimens may be used, among other options, for museum specimens,
for teaching students specimen preparation techniques, or for circulating
with teams of volunteers in the Finding Urban Nature (FUN) courses for grade
school students in Seattle. I have participated in the Fun program, and
handling House Sparrow and Starling specimens are real eye-openers for the
kids, let alone Flickers, falcons amd owls.
The only caution is, be sure to check with your spouse before you fill
your freezer with dead birds!
Happy Holiday Birding,
Fran Wood (male)
