Hi Jason and Tweeters,

Thanks for the reminder that just becuase it is dark
out there might still be birds out. About a month ago
I saw my first Barn Owl in the wild due to becoming
sick and tired of listening to neighbors fighting. So
I drove down to Kent to Russell road at about 1am,
where the Barn Owl roosts in some thick pine trees in
tiny little park. I have seen the bird's butt before
in the tree but I didn't consider that to be a good
enough look to call it a life view. (Hmm the rear end
field marks look good, the location is right, but...)
That night I saw the owl face and all very well, on a
telephone wire and then it flew to a speed limit sign
and then off into a tree.

One night a month or so before this sighting I stayed
by the little park until after dusk to see if I could
watch it fly out but it did not cooperate. I did get
so see a pair of cool grayish bats though with very
large ears fly around.

While stuck inside doing homework last night my ears

meaning to do more
owling I decided that now was as good a time as any.
The night was perfect
for owls, extremely quiet with no wind (for some
reason all the neighborhood
dogs decided not to bark tonight). I walked down the
street towards the
watershed area hoping for a Saw-whet when a BARN OWL
screamed once overhead
and disappeared. This is my second encounter with a
Barn this fall in my
neighborhood, I also did fairly well with them last
year in the early
summer. I wonder if there is a nesting pair somewhere
in downtown Oly since
all five of my sightings have been up on the hill in
NE Olympia.

Remember just because it's dark doesn't mean there
isn't a bird to be found!
Good birding,
